However, if it's only mild sleep problems, it doesn't always have to be the strongest sleeping pill, because there are also herbal alternatives. What happens while we sleep?

While you sleep, you go through cycles of different sleep stages with varying durations. After falling asleep, you enter deep sleep quite quickly. As the night progresses, however, the deep sleep phases become shorter and shorter, and the rem sleep phases, also called dream sleep, become longer. Then there is light sleep.
Depending on age, the sleep phases vary in duration. Babies sleep about 16 hours a day, while seniors sleep only 5 to 6 hours. The duration of deep sleep is also shorter. In general, the duration of sleep required decreases steadily with increasing age, which is why children in the development phase need regular bedtimes as much as possible.

There are some sleep disorders that can lead to restless sleep or even cause permanent insomnia in some cases. Here we present common sleep disorders and their symptoms.

Sleep apnea

The best-known symptom of the so-called sleep apnea syndrome is snoring. This is due to the fact that the air supply via the throat is restricted, as the muscles of the upper airways slacken. This not only results in less oxygen saturation during sleep, but can also lead to dangerous unnoticed breathing pauses at night. In addition, sufferers often wake up repeatedly due to the lack of oxygen, which also causes problems sleeping through the night or a sleep disorder. A first remedy for sleep apnea can be to change the sleeping position, because the best position for sufferers of the syndrome is the healthy side position. A supine position, on the other hand, promotes snoring, as the slackening muscles cause the tongue in the palate to fall backwards and block the trachea, causing the breathing pauses and snoring.


In addition, there are the parasomnias, which is the generic term for things that the body does or that happen to it that can affect sleep. This includes, for example, night terrors, from which children from 2 to 6 years of age often suffer. In the first 2 to 3 hours after falling asleep, children startle out of their sleep screaming in panic and crying or lashing out. What may sound dramatic, however, is not so bad. A short time later, affected children usually fall asleep again and can no longer remember it when they get up.
Night terrors should not be confused with nightmares, in which those affected can largely remember what they dreamed.
Other parasomnias include sleepwalking and teeth grinding, both of which can be triggered especially during stress and high levels of exertion.


The so-called restless legs syndrome can also occur during the day, but it is particularly troublesome during the night. Affected people feel tingling in their legs and a pulling sensation in the calf, often accompanied by repeated uncontrolled twitching of the legs. This repeatedly brings sufferers out of sleep without them being aware of the unconscious movements of their limbs, often causing daytime fatigue and exhaustion.

Tips for sleeping: what can you do about bad sleep?

Depending on the severity of the sleep disorder or sleep problem, there are many ways and sleep tips you can try to improve your sleep process. As a gentle help for mild insomnia, you can listen to relaxation music to help you fall asleep. This will calm you down and help you switch off, distracting you from potential musings.
To get an overview of your sleep quality, you can also track your sleep. A sleep tracker measures your sleep and wake phases and calculates how restful your sleep was.

Fall asleep better through a healthy sleep-wake rhythm

For healthy sleep, however, a good evening routine is the first thing that makes sense.
