In addition to special teas for women, dietary supplements and guidebooks on female health, there is also the possibility to purchase hemp and CBD products. And of course, proper nutrition also plays a supporting role as a preventive measure. However, none of this replaces the preventive examinations at the gynecologist!

The effect of CBD in women

It has long been known that there are gender-specific differences in the effect of medications. This applies not only to the necessary dosage of drugs, but often also to their effectiveness and mode of action. In studies, however, there are still a disproportionate number of male subjects, so that the effect of a drug on women is often not adequately tested.

Some studies on the topic of cannabis suggest that women react differently to it than men, but nevertheless the research situation here is still too thin to be able to make generally valid statements.
Nevertheless, some researchers assume that women perceive cannabis more intensively. The study situation is similarly expandable for CBD. However, users of CBD report a perceived effect of pain relief, which could also be beneficial for women's health. CBD oil could be a gentle means for women to relax and relieve pain of all kinds, such as menstrual cramps.

Can CBD help with period pain?

Many women suffer from severe period pains during their periods, which limits their ability to cope with everyday life. Severe period pains at work are particularly stressful.
Therefore, some women like to reach for potent painkillers, but these can damage the organs in the long run. CBD could offer a gentler, natural alternative with little to no side effects.

How does abdominal pain occur during the period?

But why do some women have such severe pain during their period in the first place?
Primary period pain occurs because the lining of the uterus is built up during the cycle as the female body prepares for the possible implantation of a fertilized egg.
When this is not the case, a woman's body produces the hormones prostaglandins, which cause the uterus to contract during the period and shed the lining again along with the unfertilized eggs. Some women produce an excess of prostaglandins, which then leads to severe cramping pain during menstruation.
However, it could also be secondary menstrual pain, which is pain that occurs due to a condition such as endometriosis. In this case, a doctor should definitely be consulted.
In general, if you have very severe period pain, it is recommended to make a preventive appointment with your gynecologist or a women's health practice to rule out secondary pain.

What can help those affected?

In addition to the usual health recommendations to exercise during the period (for example, running or fitness training) and to eat a healthy and balanced diet with sufficient vitamins, many women see no way to manage their daily lives during the period without strong medication.
Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) are often prescribed for severe period pain because they inhibit the enzymes cyclooxygenases (COX), which are mainly involved in the production of prostaglandins. Thus, the body produces fewer prostaglandins and there is less cramping and pain in the abdomen. However, in the long run, NSAIDs are harmful to some organs, such as the gastrointestinal tract or the heart, and some have severe side effects. And then there is the group of women for whom the medication does not help with the pain.

How could CBD help with period pain?

But strong, kidney-damaging drugs may not be necessary at all! What if instead there was a gentler, natural remedy that also posed few side effects and risks?
According to a study, CBDa, a precursor of CBD, could inhibit the enzymes cyclooxygenases similar to NSAIDs. So again, less prostaglandins would be produced, which in turn would lead to less severe menstrual pain. And CBD has hardly any side effects!
This is also in line with previous studies, which suggest that CBD docks to our body's endocannabinoid system, which among other things influences our pain sensation. Nevertheless, we still need more studies and research on CBD before we can confirm an effect 100%.

CBD for menopause symptoms

Women between the ages of 50 and 60 face another drastic phase for the female body: The menopause, the second puberty in the life of every woman. As with menstrual cramps, those affected often try to counteract this with strong medications, although there are also gentler methods from natural medicine.

What is menopause?

In her early 50s, a woman's body changes and becomes increasingly infertile. The female hormones progesterone and estrogen are produced less in the ovaries, ovulation occurs less frequently and periods become irregular until they stop altogether with the last bleeding, the so-called menopause. The symptoms are therefore triggered by hormonal fluctuations. Mood swings are thus pre-programmed and are often aggravated by headaches, restlessness, anxiety and the other symptoms.

Research approaches and user experiences: How might CBD help?

Based on studies, researchers suspect that CBD interacts with our body's endocannabinoid system (ECS). Among other things, the ECS has an influence on our emotions, our appetite and our perception of pain. Thus, CBD could influence our perception of pain.
