Hemp seeds can boost some dishes and are a healthy addition to boot.
And, unlike their intoxicating compatriots, you can use them without worry in dishes served at everything from kids' birthdays to work parties with your boss. You can also snack on them as much as you like without fear of any nasty surprises.
What's the point? Why it pays to cook with hemp
- Thanks to their tangy and spicy taste, hemp seeds are true all-rounders in the kitchen.
- At the same time, they have plenty of healthy omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids, as well as protein and fiber.
- Hemp roots and seeds do not contain cannabinoids and therefore have nothing to do with THC.
- Good for the climate: Unlike some other superfoods, hemp feels perfectly at home in our latitudes which means it’s cultivated with few resources. All this leads to a very good eco-balance.
- Hemp is gluten and lactose free.
Good to know: Both hulled and unhulled hemp seeds are available in stores. Hulled hemp seeds have a higher share of high-quality proteins and fats than unhelled seeds, and are also more easily digested. You can find them at your local organic grocer and now also in many conventional supermarkets.

1. Spread hummus, not hate, with hemp hummus
4 tsp hemp seeds
4 tsp lemon juice
3 cups chickpeas
2 tsp water
2 garlic cloves
6 tsp olive oil, plus some for garnish
1 tsp salt
For garnish: Paprika powder, chili flakes, chopped parsley or cilantro to taste.
- 1. Crush the hemp seeds with a food processor or in a mortar.
- 2. Add the remaining ingredients and blend until the hummus reaches a creamy consistency.
- 3. Arrange the hummus in a bowl, drizzle olive oil over it and garnish it with the spices of your choice.
2. La dolce Vita with cilantro-hemp “pesto”
We deliberately put "pesto" in quotation marks because, strictly speaking, this is not a classic pesto recipe. Our more modern version uses hemp seeds instead of the traditional pine nuts as an ingredient.
And if you're one of those people for whom cilantro tastes like soap, you can easily replace it with another spice, like basil.
2 bunches of coriander
½ cup hemp seeds (hulled)
2 garlic cloves
½ teaspoon salt
¼ cup extra virgin olive oil
- 1. Blitz all the ingredients except the olive oil in a food processor until everything is finely chopped (a hand-held immersion blender will also do).
- 2. Add the olive oil gradually until everything is well-mixed and you have a near-creamy consistency.
- 3. Buon appetito! You can enjoy your pesto right away, together with a plate of pasta, or store it in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 5 days.
3. Better than coffee? Energy balls with hemp
1 cup oatmeal
½ cup hemp seeds (hulled)
6 Medjool dates, seeded and chopped
3 tablespoons pure maple syrup
½ teaspoon vanilla extract
For garnish: hemp seeds, coconut flakes, cinnamon or cocoa powder to taste
- 1 Blitz all the ingredients in the food processor until everything is chopped and blended.
- 2. Add a tablespoon of water if needed to get the consistency right. Add some rolled oats or put the dough in the fridge for 20 minutes if it seems too sticky.
- 3. Roll the dough into balls about 2-3 cm in diameter.
- 4. For a finishing touch, you can roll your hemp energy balls in things like hemp seeds, shredded coconut, cinnamon or cocoa powder, or whatever tickles your fancy.
The energy balls will keep in the refrigerator for 1 to 2 weeks. You can also put them in the freezer for up to 2 to 3 months.
4. To die for – chocolate-hemp spread
Go ahead, accuse us of laziness, but even though the next recipe hardly counts as cooking per se, who cares when the result delivers something as addictive as this?
1/4 cup hemp seeds
1/3 cup cocoa
1/4 cup coconut oil
2 tablespoons honey
a pinch of sea salt
Crush the hemp seeds and mix them with the rest of the ingredients. Sweeten the mixture to taste. And that’s it – your to-die-for chocolate hemp butter is ready to go. It’s perfect not only for breakfast, but also as a healthy snack to get you through the day.
4.2 Green hemp smoothie as a midday pick-you-up
The great thing about this one is that you’ve likely got many of the ingredients in your kitchen already. So what are you waiting for? Go get your shot of green goodness!
1½ cups fresh spinach leaves
¼ cup hemp seeds (hulled)
1 cup plant-based milk of your choice
2 peeces of peeled ginger (2-fingers’ width)
½ cup banana slices
1 cup frozen pineapple chunks
Blitz all ingredients with a smoothie mixer or blender. Et voilà!
